J is for Jon Bengtsson

ABC Wednesday

Jon Bengtsson in Ströby 1719-1797 – an important man in his time.
My father’s father’s  father’s mother’s  mother’s mother’s father.

He was a member of the parliament in Sweden. Representing the peasantry. He was the first from peasantry to be a member in the finance departement.

In Sweden at that time we hade Parliamentary positions with nobles, clergy, burghers and peasants.

At the Parliament meeting 1771-1772 he saved the very old rights of women in our area to have the same inheritance rights as men. This was special for the part called Värend in the south of Sweden known for strong and to the king loyal women.

Other women i Sweden lacked this rights and the Parliament wanted to take it away from us too. Thanks to the smart and highly respected Jon Bengtsson they did not succeed.

This is my costume from Värend. I made it 1976. Many Värends-women wear this costume when celebrating and at important feasts.

How beautiful is your national costume! And how clever and skillful you are to make it yourself! Your ancestor was a very important man to save the rights of women. Was this still before the Napoleonic time, before Bernadotte became king of Sweden? This is a great and educational post! Thank you.

Go Jon Bengtsson! It's always great to read about people who believed in equal rights.
The costume is gorgeous, the colours on the deep blue are beautiful.

I'm glad they didn't take away your rights too. This is a fascinating post. Its wonderful that you could trace your geneology back to such a influential man in Swedish history.

A wonderful family connection, and a man ahead of his time, pity there weren't more of them at that time. Your embroidery is lovely, what a treat to wear.

What a neat post, and very cool ancestry (although it took me a few minutes to figure out the lineage!).
